Youth Artists Paint a Sea Life Mural

Twenty two young artists, ages 6 to16, spent Saturday, August 29th transforming the 150’ storefront of Catalina Offshore Products, a leading San Diego based seafood wholesale/retail market on Loveland Street in the Morena District, into a sea life filled mural of creatures large and small.  The collaborative effort was orchestrated by Lori Byron of the Chuck Byron Youth Art, Inc..

These young artists were so focused on their art, it took less than a day to complete the project. Parents were there with support, handing brushes, getting more paint and, at times adding a few strokes to their children’s works of art.   Little brothers and sisters pitched in with the paint on the lower parts of the wall and by 2:00 the mural was complete.

The project got its start when Tommy Gomes and David Rudie of Catalina Offshore Products mentioned to Lori Byron that they had a building in need of a facelift.  And, Lori went to work.

She called on kids that had previously submitted artwork to her FISH ON! ART CONTEST, and others who had expressed an interest in learning the art of mural painting.  She rounded up sponsors BEHR PAINT and HOME DEPOT to provide the paint and tools needed to complete the project.  Contractor CERVIZZI PAINTING sprayed a blue backdrop of water and Janet Fleming from BLAST OF COLORS.COM provided the mural expertise to bring the project together.  Members of the SAN DIEGO ROD & REEL CLUB helped stir and pour paint and were out in force to show their support for the foundation.

As he has done at many of San Diego’s kids fishing events, Tommy Gomes and the pro-staff of UNI BUTTER, cooked up wonderful fresh fish tacos and provided refreshment with the support of CATALINA OFFSHORE PRODUCTS, HANSEN’S SODA, and SPECIALTY PRODUCE.

The Chuck Byron Youth Art, Inc. makes this and other hands-on art projects happen free to the artists by raising funds at the annual FISH ON! ANGLER’S TOURNAMENT.  The sixth annual tournament will take place on Sept. 19, 2009.  The competition is open to private boaters and sportboat anglers. Kids 16 & under fish free on the sportboats with each paid adult. An awards banquet and auction will be held on Sunday September 20th.  A component of the live auction at the banquet includes original art created by young artists.  Raffle and auction items include fishing tackle, fishing trips and resort vacations provided by industry sponsors.  Money raised helps support kids that have a passion for art and want to learn more through our world of fishing the oceans.

The public is welcome to join the tournament and/or the banquet. The banquet and live auction will take place at us the BALI HAI RESTAURANT on beautiful Shelter Island from noon- 4:00. Tickets for the banquet are available at the door for $20.

For more information on future art programs planned for the kids, to fish the tournament or attend the banquet and support these young artists, go to WWW.CHUCKBYRON.COM or call 619-301-3193.

2009 FISH ON! Angler’s Tournament Results

On Saturday, September 19th, the 6th annual Chuck Byron FISH ON! Anglers Tournament commenced. Both private boat anglers and sportboat anglers competed in seven “biggest fish” categories to win top prizes donated by sponsors. Custom built rods built by several of the west coasts’ best builders, Chuck Byron Lithographs, and Wide World Fish Mounts, were awarded to the following winners. Robert Uyeda, on Gettin Jiggy, caught a 21 lb. yellowfin tuna. Steve Stachelski, on Bass Rat, took three categories with a 15 lb. Dorado, a 2 lb. calico bass, and a 1.5 lb. spotted bay bass. The yellowtail division was won by Tony Shepardson, on Jawbreaker, catching an 11.5 pounder. Awards were also given to the top lady angler, Cheri Fleming, with her 12 lb. yellowtail. Youth angler, Roman Lira, caught an 18.5 lb. yellowfin tuna to take the top youth prize. Tournament Director Lori Byron says, “The fish weren’t real big this year, but everyone caught several and had a lot of fun”.  Two sportboats, the El Dorado and the Eclipse, both took out youth anglers to fish the tournament at “no charge”, in support to sponsor this tournament.

On Sunday a luncheon-awards banquet was held at the Bali Hai Restaurant, on beautiful Shelter Island. The fishing tournament winners were awarded along with twelve youth artists that are the winners of this years Fish On! Youth Art Contest. Artists from ages 5 to 18 years received $200 in art supplies, fishing tackle, and a fishing trip sponsored by Friends of Rollo. The fishing industry and the art community donated thousands of dollars of products for the raffle and auction items to raise funds. The proceeds that were raised go to The Chuck Byron Youth Art, Inc. to encourage inspiring young artists by teaching them the “art of fishing” and an appreciation of our marine life.
